BIOGRAPHY OF HIS MAJESTY MORENA E MOHOLO: MOREMOHOLO MOTEBANG MOPELI
His Majesty Morena e Moholo: Moremoholo Motebang Mopeli was born on 10 May at Elizabeth Ross Hospital to Her Majesty Mofumahali Mathokoana Mopeli and the late King, Morena e Moholo: Motebang Ntsane Mopeli.
Morena e Moholo was officially coronated on 13 October 2018, assuming his role as King, custodian of the traditions, culture, and welfare of his people. Since ascending the throne, His Majesty has demonstrated visionary leadership, rooted in compassion, progress, and an unwavering dedication to service. Deeply passionate about education, the arts, youth empowerment, and elderly care, His Majesty has spearheaded numerous community-based initiatives. In partnership with the Bakoena Royal Council and through the Likoena Tsa Bakoena Foundation, he has established strategic collaborations with public and private stakeholders to deliver impactful development programs. These include outreach projects in education, skills development, healthcare, and cultural preservation.
In addition to his royal responsibilities, Morena e Moholo is a gifted fine artist whose work has been internationally exhibited in prestigious galleries and exhibitions across Germany, Switzerland, and other countries. An avid traveller, His Majesty finds great joy in meeting people from all walks of life, often exchanging ideas and inspiration rooted in shared humanity.
A proud Mosotho man, His Majesty serves as the cultural and spiritual anchor of the Basotho people in South Africa.. Together with the Royal Family and the Royal Council, he is a committed guardian of the Sesotho language, heritage, and land. The Royal House under his stewardship continues to preserve and promote the customs, oral traditions, and ancestral practices that define the identity of the Basotho.
Looking to the future, His Majesty is focused on the successful implementation of the QwaQwa 5-Year Plan, a transformative framework developed in collaboration with the Bakoena Royal Council and key partners. The plan is centered on poverty alleviation, economic revitalisation, job creation, youth skills development, and cultural sustainability.
Morena e Moholo is married to Her Majesty Queen Mamotebang Mopeli. Morena e Moholo is, blessed with two sons, Prince Motebang and Prince Seeiso Mopeli as well two daughters Princess Senate and Princess Shoeshoe Mopeli.
King Mopeli is the youngest and only surviving son of four children, preceded by his siblings: the late Morena e Moholo Thokoana, Kgosana Ntsane, and Kgosatsana Manapo Mopeli.
With wisdom, humility, and a deep reverence for his heritage, His Majesty continues to lead his people with honour upholding the legacy of the Mopeli Royal House while steering Basotho toward a prosperous and united future.
HER MAJESTY QUEEN MAMOTEBANG MOPELI (NÉE NEO MONONELA)
BIOGRAPHY OF HER MAJESTY MOFUMAHALI NEO MAMOTEBANG MOPELI
Her Majesty Queen Mamotebang Mopeli, born on 18 November in Polokwane, Limpopo Province, is the esteemed Queen Consort (Mofumahali oa Morena e Moholo) to His Majesty Morena e Moholo, Moremoholo Mopeli. In her capacity within the royal household, she plays a vital role in advancing the strategic vision of the institution, with particular emphasis on youth empowerment, education, sustainable development, and inclusive socio-economic transformation.
Her Majesty is a committed advocate for education and rural development, as well as a dedicated philanthropist. Through the Bakoena Kingship and Foundation, she leads numerous community-centred initiatives that are underpinned by a shared institutional commitment with His Majesty to strengthen communities through knowledge dissemination, capacity building, and improved access to developmental resources. In furtherance of this mandate, Their Majesties have fostered collaborative partnerships across public and private sector institutions, thereby promoting integrated and inclusive development outcomes.
From a professional perspective, Her Majesty is an Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa, holding multiple degrees which include a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. She possesses extensive experience across both the public and private sectors, with demonstrated competence in senior leadership, governance, legal advisory roles, and institutional administration. Her dual role as a traditional leader and qualified attorney uniquely positions her to uphold cultural values while advancing progressive change within legal, social, and governance frameworks.
Her Majesty is a recipient of the Forty Under Forty Award, conferred by the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities and the NYDA, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to youth development and philanthropy. She has also been recognised as one of the Sunday World Heroic Women of 2025, among other accolades reflecting her sustained impact in leadership, advocacy, and community development.
In her broader governance and oversight responsibilities, Her Majesty serves on several national structures, where she represents and advances the interests of culture, arts, traditional and royal communities, while promoting participatory governance and institutional accountability. She serves on the oversight structures of the National Arts Council and the South African Weather Service, and is also one of twenty-five Commissioners appointed to the Presidential Climate Commission by the President of the Republic of South Africa. In this role, she contributes legal expertise, policy oversight, and traditional governance perspectives to national climate change discourse, strategic planning, and community-centred policy development.
Beyond her formal duties, Her Majesty is an avid traveller and cultural enthusiast, with a deep appreciation for intercultural exchange and heritage preservation.

HER MAJESTY QUEEN MOTHER : MATHOKOANA MOPELI
BIOGRAPHY OF HER MAJESTY: MOFUMAHALI MATHOKOANA MOPELI
Her Majesty Queen Mother Mathokoana Mopeli is a revered matriarch of the Bakoena Nation and the widow of the late King, His Majesty Morena e Moholo: Motebang Mopeli. She is the mother of the reigning King, His Majesty Morena e Moholo: Moremoholo Motebang Mopeli, as well as the late Morena e Moholo Thokoana Kgosana Ntsane, and Kgosatsana Manapo Mopeli.
Trained as an educator, Queen Mother Mathokoana served her community in the field of education with distinction until the untimely passing of her husband. In a moment that called for immense strength and service, she gracefully stepped into the role of Acting Regent for her son, the late Morena e Moholo Thokoana Mopeli, a role she carried with dignity and wisdom over many years.
During her regency, Her Majesty simultaneously held several senior positions in government. Queen Mother has served as both Local and District Mayor as well a board member and chairperson of several entities, including those in the traditional leadership, public and private sector space. In these leadership roles, she was instrumental in initiating and implementing key infrastructure and community development projects many of which continue to benefit the people of QwaQwa and the surrounding regions to this day. Her legacy in public office is marked by progress in service delivery, housing development, youth support, and access to basic services in historically disadvantaged communities.
Even beyond her formal regency and public service, the Queen Mother remains a pillar of compassion and leadership. She continues to champion causes close to her heart, particularly those impacting the elderly, women, and other vulnerable groups. Through ongoing initiatives and outreach programs, she actively leads efforts to restore dignity, health, and hope to the most marginalised in society.
Affectionately known across the region as “The Mother of the Nation,” Queen Mother Mathokoana is celebrated for her wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to peace and community unity. Her solution-oriented nature and nurturing leadership style have made her a trusted figure among both traditional leaders and citizens.
Outside of her royal and public duties, Her Majesty is a devoted mother, grandmother, and mentor to many. She finds joy in gardening, physical wellness, and spending quality time with her family. Her Majesty Queen Mother Mathokoana Mopeli continues to serve as a beacon of grace and resilience, uplifting her nation through a lifetime of leadership, love, and service.
COMPOSITION OF THE KINGDOM
The Bakoena Royal Council has 5 Segments in the service, and under the command of Morena e Moholo:
- The Administrative Office consists of: an office manager, Morena e Moholo’s personal assistant, driver, cleaner and security team.
- The Executive Council, consisting of all Marena a Sehloho (Senior Traditional leaders) who reign over the Seven Districts, namely:

- Mabolela
- The Advisory Council, consisting of selected royal family members, as well as community members who have diverse expertise in various fields of society.
- The Queens and Princesses Forum, consisting of young and elderly ladies from the royal family.
- The General Council consists of The Executive Council, the Advisory Forum, the Queens and Princesses Council, the Administrative Office, as well as selected and elected Traditional Council members who come from the seven communities of the Bakoena Kingdom.
